ThanksTomorrow marks the fifth anniversary of the creation of the Burlington Writers Workshop. Five years is an eternity for projects like these, so thank you to everyone who makes this community vibrant and strong.

A bit of history: I remember signing up for my first meeting (the group was founded on Meetup.com by someone who has since moved away). It was a spring day in 2009 and I actually thought: Do I really need to attend? What will happen at this meeting? I almost didn’t go. It was easier to just stay home and read or cook dinner or take a nap. But I was new to the area and I wanted to make some friends, so I thought: Why not try it?

And here we are.

Anyway, those are the Cliff Notes of a much longer story. Here are this week’s opportunities and announcements.

Opportunities

The next deadline to have your work considered in the Hotel Vermont book is June 30th. Please send your short fiction, nonfiction, and poetry to submissions@burlingtonwritersworkshop.com. Include a brief biography. Please do use standard workshop formatting. No PDFs, just Word documents. We don’t check this email often, so direct any questions you may have to me.

I’m going to need some volunteers to keep the space open for the month of June. Here are the shifts I have available. Preference will be given to folks who can take that shift every week for the whole month. Folks who work the morning shift get a key. The shifts are:

Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. – 1 p.m., 1 p.m. – 6 p.m.

Workshop leaders close up when the workshop is finished. Contact me if you’re interested.

I know it’s only May, but AWP’s next conference is in Minneapolis in April 2015 and I’m definitely going. I know at least one other BWW member is going. With a few more, we could make this an epic road trip. Who’s with me? Contact me if you’re interested. And learn more about the AWP conference.

I need 3-4 more people to help call some libraries and see if they’re interested in buying a copy of The Best of the Burlington Writers Workshop 2014. Anyone able to help? Contact me.

Announcements

Congrats again to Michelle Watters for having another poem accepted for publication, this time at Bop Dead City.

The fundraising effort is going strong! If you’d like to help out the BWW in a special way, make a sustaining member gift of $12/month. When you do, a group of donors and Cope and Associates will give the BWW $25. You’ll also be entered in a drawing to win tickets to Patty Griffin at the Flynn on June 14th. Make your gift now.

Thanks again for your support!
